Art - Andrew Lipson & Daniel Shiu recreate Escher with... Legos!

M.C. Escher was one of my first loves in terms of art... I would daydream about wandering in his worlds the way Alice wandered in wonderland. Nostalgia set aside, these two fellows, Andrw Lipson and Daniel Shiu recreated some of his more famous pieces in legos (with variable levels of success)! Check it out (website is here)!
I've posted all the Escher construction they've done so far, but there are other neat mathematical sculpture and pieces of lego engineering that worth a looksee... Oh and a couple dilbert statues if you're into that sort of thing. : j

  1. How interesting. I wonder what inspired them to do such a thing.

  3. The world would be a lot better if we all had Lego's to play with.

Very cool Lego interpretations of MC Escher!

  4. The world would be better but for many things. Alas, we can only make do with what is... That said there is number of things we can do on our own scales. Make people dream, make a child laugh, or vice versa... Or perhaps make people laugh and dream like children.

I love how they had to resort to trickery to build the structure from the physically impossible drawing.

  5. What???? That's impossible! He can't make Eschers real! Wow. And with Legos.
    Legos rule the world, man.

  6. I know! It's crazy what people build out of legos! : j

Have you heard of the origami paper airplane launched earthwards from space?
Here's a short article about it!

  8. My son has been building with Legos since he was four. Earlier, if you count Duplos and Primos. We must have hundreds of thousands of pieces from hundreds of sets at this point. I have to show him these pictures. He'll be amazed!

Good-night/morning Theresa! When are you going to graduate him to technics? ; j
If he's interested, there are any number of crazy lego creations, google it! : j
You have lego life-sized furniture, there was a lego house, a 3/4 ford car of some sort (sorry i can't remember the model), and a number of lego life sized statues. : j

  11. Heya Elizabeth! According to the site, Belvedere was done in "only a few evenings spread over two or three weeks", whilst the Balcony was worked on "intermittently for nearly three months". : j
Some people write, others defy the laws physics with legos. ; j

  12. Alesa, I just showed him and his friend the pictures. They thought they were cool.

My son makes pretty amazing creations on his own. I think MIT has a camp in the summer to do really cool stuff with Legos, but he doesn't want to take it.
